Day 3 Update

Day 3. Wow, it’s hard to think we are already half way through our first week here in Hollywood.

I have met some really nice people out here so far! Primarily, the people that work at Columbia College. They are willing to do just about anything for us and keep us VERY well fed. Beyond the instructors, a lot of the kids my age are fun, too. There’s 2 or 3 that are a little….left of center….but the rest are really great people and it’s fun to learn with them.

Today, our main focus was writing scripts for our mini movies. We have been told we will have only a few hours to record, which definitely adds a twist to things. We sat in circles with our script instructor (who is AMAZINGLY TALENTED and has done A LOT in the move industry), and we talked about our scripts. She gave me a lot of compliments (along with Dawn) about how we are some of the strongest people in the group and we will soar in this program and in the near future.

The instructors out here have also said some really neat things about the film industry and I’ve been jotting a few of them down. Some of them are:

“Filmmaking is a lot like looking for a needle in a haystack. There are only a few big catches each year” – Bonnie (scriptwriting instructor)

“Time is film’s biggest enemy” – Leeland (basic filmmaking instructor)

“In the film business, you WILL NOT meet creative people when giving your pitches to executives. They just want to change your ideas and do what they do best – be a business” - Bonnie (scriptwriting instructor)

“At the end of your movie production, one of two things will happen. 1. You’ll get filfty rich, or 2, you’ll want to eat shit and die.” – Leeland (basic filmmaking instructor)

Tonight we attended the red carpet premiere of Talladega Nights – the movie with Will Ferrel that’s supposed to be about a funny NASCAR driver. We got some awesome seats and got to see some celebrities that are more local (nobody TOO huge), but the movie was slightly disappointing. There were a lot of funny moments that lasted a few seconds, but there was a nice 25 minute stretch were a lot of people around me (myself included) were dozing off. Other than that, it was awesome!

That’s about it for Day 3. I’ll be writing more soon!
